ROOTED is a one-day Jewish volunteer event on Sunday, September 21, 2025 with 1,000+ participants of all ages taking on hands-on projects at dozens of outdoor sites across NYC, Westchester and Long Island. Locations include parks, riverbanks, beaches, trails, gardens, farms, and nature centers.

ROOTED shifts will take place between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM with different length projects throughout the day.

Powered by Adamah NY, ROOTED is a joyful way to gather with community before the High Holidays while kicking off Climate Week NYC and honoring Sun Day, a global day of climate and community action.

Everyone! Adults, kids (8+), teens, families, singles, groups, synagogues, community centers, schools, environmental groups, affinity groups and corporate groups — all are welcome.

Teens can volunteer with their family or join a teen-only group with peers and trained educators. Totally up to you (and them!).

Younger kids under 8 should join mini ROOTED , a nature-based morning for little ones and their grown-ups. If you have both older and younger kids, you can either:
• Bring everyone to a regular site (under-8s may not participate), or
• Bring older siblings to mini ROOTED — fun for kids up to age 10. Your call!

Absolutely! ROOTED is grounded in Jewish values, and open to all. Some sites may include intention-setting or reflection, but there’s no prayer or expectation. Come as you are.

Yes. We have low-impact sites for folks with mobility or bathroom needs. Let us know when you register and we’ll match you accordingly.

Real, meaningful work requested by our site partners — like planting, weeding, harvesting, trail clearing, or shoreline cleanup. No busywork. You’ll make a real impact.

We provide all tools and supplies. Just bring:
• Snacks
• A refillable water bottle
• Comfortable, closed-toe shoes
• Clothes that can get dirty
• Sunscreen and/or a hat

No meals are provided. Bring your own and don’t forget to bring water! We’ll offer fruit at most sites and suggest a great picnic spot nearby if your shift overlaps with lunch.

We’re planning rain or shine, unless conditions are unsafe. Every participant gets a ROOTED poncho — rain or not!

We suggest a donation of $18 per adult or $36 per family to help cover supplies, permits, and staffing.
You’ll also be able to buy ROOTED swag and t-shirts if you’d like.

Yes. All sites have trained staff and security coordination with local officials. Safety is a top priority.

For now, you can sign up for one session (morning or afternoon). We may open double shifts closer to the event if space allows.

Yes — all sites have access to bathrooms or portable toilets.

All sites are public transit-accessible and/or have nearby parking. Full directions will be sent in advance.

Yes! We’ll send certificates of hours to anyone who requests one.
